What is Daylight Saving Time? DST (also called Summer Time) is the practice of advancing clocks by one hour during warmer months so evening daylight lasts longer. Countries in the northern hemisphere spring forward in March–April and fall back in October–November. Countries in the southern hemisphere do the reverse. Over 40% of the world no longer observes DST — China, Japan, India, Russia, and most of Africa and South America have abolished it.

Frequently Asked Questions about DST

Which US states don't observe DST?

Hawaii and most of Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) do not observe Daylight Saving Time and stay on standard time year-round.

Is the EU planning to abolish DST?

The European Parliament voted to end mandatory seasonal clock changes in 2019, but the directive has not been finalized. EU countries continue to observe DST as of 2025.

Why do southern hemisphere countries have opposite DST dates?

Because their seasons are reversed. When it's summer in Australia (October–April), clocks spring forward — the opposite of Northern Hemisphere countries.

Which countries recently abolished DST?

Russia (2014), Turkey (2016), Mexico (2022 for most regions), and several others have permanently adopted standard or summer time without seasonal changes.

Does China observe Daylight Saving Time?

No. China abolished DST in 1991 and uses a single time zone (CST, UTC+8) across its entire territory year-round.

What time do clocks change?

In most countries, clocks change at 2:00 AM local time. In the US, spring forward sets clocks to 3:00 AM; fall back sets them to 1:00 AM.
