The world is divided into 24 standard time zones, each one hour apart, aligned to the meridian lines running from the North Pole to the South Pole. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the international baseline — a location's UTC offset tells you how many hours ahead or behind that location is relative to UTC.
In practice, countries don't always follow the nearest meridian — political borders, economic ties, and historical decisions mean the actual time zone offset map is irregular. China, for example, uses a single UTC+8 zone across its entire territory, which is roughly 5 time zones wide geographically.
Some territories also use half-hour or quarter-hour offsets — India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), and Iran (UTC+3:30) are the most notable examples.
Daylight Saving & DST
About 70 countries observe Daylight Saving Time (DST), which shifts clocks forward by one hour in spring and back in autumn. This means a city's effective UTC offset changes seasonally — New York is UTC−5 in winter (EST) but UTC−4 in summer (EDT).
The live city times on this world time zone map always reflect the current actual local time, including DST adjustments — so you never have to calculate manually.
